Play music. Play the Web. Songbird.
The screen capture above (which is a thumbnail and will display full size if you click on it) shows my freshly installed Songbird.
Songbird is a desktop media player mashed-up with the Web. Songbird is committed to playing the music you want, from the sites you want, on the devices you want, challenging the conventions of discovery, purchase, consumption and organization of music on the Internet.
On this page: http://www.howtoforge.com/installing_songbird_on_ubuntu_gutsy_gibbon is the installation guide that I followed. It contains an easy to understand step by step walk through. As the link tells it is a how to on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.
A convenient i386 .deb package is found at the getdeb.net website: http://www.getdeb.net/download.php?release=1801&fpos=0
Geek Girl is crazy about music.
I have connected my Last.fm account to this Last.fm radio player (see capture).
This is how you can do it too.
(you will need a last.fm account, obviously)
- Open the Add/Remove found under Applications.
- Type ‘lastfm’ in the search and check off the checkbox to Last.Fm. Apply the changes and let it install.
- Close.
It is now installed and can be found through Applications/Sound & Video/Last.fm. When you click on it the Setup Wizard for your Last.Fm player starts which only is about connecting to your Last.Fm account using your username and password.
Do you know your computer? If you don’t, install Sysinfo.
With Sysinfo which is a System information extraction program you can find out facts about your computer.
To install you simply go to Add/Remove that is located in Applications and search for it under ‘System Tools’.
The picture below provides a more clear description. It is a thumbnail and if you click on it you can view full size.
After the installation you find it under Applications/System Tools/Sysinfo.
Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon NVIDIA problem
My computer froze when I used Desktop Effects (Desktop effects = Beryl, Compiz, etc) and the problem lied with the drivers for NVIDIA that needed to be updated. I solved it by opening up the Console and logged in as root and ran the following:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
No more computer freeze!
Murrine.
Murrine is an Italian word meaning the glass artworks done by Venicians glass blowers. Murrine Engine is a Gtk2 engine that will make your desktop look like a beautiful Murrina (which is the italian singular of Murrine).
In other words, a program that lets you theme (skin) your Ubuntu.
I did not encounter any problem when installing Murrine on my Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I am using the Olive theme seen on the screen capture. The following 4 steps are the procedure I went about installing Murrine.
- Create a folder in your Home Folder that you name .themes (the dot is suppose to be infront of the name).i. Files with a dot infront of the name are invisible unless you choose for them to be visible through checking ‘Show hidden files’ located under ‘View’.
- Download themes from this page, link: http://www.cimitan.com/pages/murrine/themes.php and extract them into the folder you just created.
- Download the Murrine Configurator deb file on this link: http://murrine.netsons.org/files/murrine-configurator_3.deb and let it install.
- Restart the computer.
Now your Murrine installation is found at System/Preferences/New Murrine Configurator.

The following screen capture shows the path to Murrine and the Murrine Configurator. The themes I have placed in my .themes folder are visible in the list.
